Debunking the Doula Myth
As someone who is excited and passionate about the birth world I have heard a lot of things in my day. When I made the decision to pursue my passions right off the bat I heard varying degrees of what they thought a doula was. Everything from “Oh, so you’re like a midwife in training?” to “That’s nice, but I’d never use a doula…I like medication WAY too much.” Or to even “Don’t they only go to homebirths?” Or the best one still “Isn’t that what a partner is for?” Many people still don’t know what a doula is OR what the role of a doula is truly about, so let’s explore further and debunk some myths surrounding the role of doula. Myth #1.) “Do you deliver the baby?” No. While doula’s are trained professionals, we are not medically trained to deliver a baby or administer medical care or advice.
